KREI News

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) hosted the 11th FANEA (Forum for Agricultural Policy Research in North East Asia) international symposium on “Assessment of Agricultural Policy and Development of Less-Favored Areas in Korea, China, and Japan” jointly with the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Development of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS/IAED) and Japan’s Policy Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PRIMAFF) at the Hubei Hotel, Beijing, China on December 8 (Thurs.).

In the forum, six speakers from Korea, China, and Japan made presentations and nine discussants took part in discussions. KREI President Kim Changgil chaired the presentations and discussion in the second session on “Development of Less-Favored Areas.” Drs. Kim Meebok and Chung Dochae made a presentation, and Drs. Park Moonho and Park Shihyun participated in discussions.

In the presentations and discussion, recognizing the similar megatrend, the aging and depopulation of rural communities, despite some differences among the current situations of the three nations’ agriculture and rural areas, participants agreed that if the three countries share one another’s experiences and jointly seek solutions to problems, better policy plans can be made.

In this event, the presidents of the three institutes promised to continue cooperation in various fields based on the friendship for the past 10 years, and decided to hold next year’s symposium in Tokyo, Japan around October.

Since 2003, the three institutions including KREI have operated FANEA and hosted international symposiums to promote exchange of information and materials on agricultural and rural policies and academic activities. FANEA has dealt with common agricultural policy issues to North East Asia in depth as well as agricultural policies in each of the three nations.
