KREI News

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) hosted a policy forum on the possibility of and strategy for the expansion of rice exports at aT Center, Seoul, on September 9.
KREI opened the debate to examine the possibility of an increase in the export of domestic rice and seek plans for it in order to mitigate the rice supply-demand imbalance. About 30 people attended the forum, including rice export experts from KREI, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Rural Development Administration, universities, and regional agricultural cooperatives, and journalists.
In his presentation, "The Current Status of the Export of Domestic Rice and the Possibility of Its Expansion," Grain Office Director Kim Taehun of KREI said that the following are necessary to increase rice exports: an autonomous control organization, export promotion programs, development of exportable processed rice products, and training of export specialists. He also argued that it is needed to improve rice quality and secure the quotas. Director William T. Kang of Byasiafood and President Jin Yonghwa of the Dongsong Agricultural Cooperative made presentations on "The Present Situation of the Export and Marketing of Korean Rice and Ways to Expand Korea's Rice Exports" and "The Current State and Problems of the Export of Cheolwon Rice and Their Solutions" respectively.
KREI senior research fellow Park Donggyu said, "The export of rice costs less than the stock treatment method such as overseas aid" and "Although export is insufficient as the disposal of rice stock, it is more positive in terms of costs and side effects than other alternatives."
