KREI Holds Workshop on Rural Job Creation

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) hosted a workshop on December 13, 2012, at the research institute's conference hall to discuss how to create jobs in rural Korea. At the workshop, a presentation was also made to report the results of a joint research entrusted by KREI to eight regional development institutes to prepare a plan for creating jobs in their respective regions.

In a keynote speech delivered at the workshop, Song Mi-Ryung, a senior researcher of KREI, made a strong assertion that, in addition to a comprehensive analysis of the experience of creating good jobs as surveyed by the eight development institutes, the future rural policy should focus on creating locally beneficial, sustainable and attractive jobs that make best use of rural features rather than on creating simple jobs that would disappear with the ending of a quantitative support.

The eight regional development institutes also suggested policy implications for future rural policy based on their analysis of creating jobs in their respective regions. In the general discussion presided by Park Shi-Hyun, a senior researcher at KREI, participants exchanged ideas and views on how to create jobs in rural areas and improve related policies.
