International Symposium on Development of Food Processing 
Industry for Creation of High Added Values

 The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) hosted an international symposium on October 25 to discuss ways of developing the food processing industry to create high added values in the agricultural sector. KREI President Lee Dong-Phil greeted the participants in the opening ceremony and asked them to review recent industry trends and seek development strategies.  

   KREI researcher Choi Ji-Hyeon delivered a keynote speech on ways of developing the meat processing industry in Korea. In the speech, Choi proposed a number of directions to follow: development of products that cater to consumers' taste for safe and high-quality goods; construction of a stable raw material supply system; procurement of infrastructure for export, education and R&D; and improvement of related regulations. 
Prof. Rodolfo M. Nayga, Jr. of University of Arkansas (food and health concerns and current trends) also delivered a keynote speech along with KREI researcher Lee Yong-Sun (current state and development direction of kimchi industry in Korea) and Prof. Kubota Yumi of Nihon University (current state and future prospect of pickled vegetable industry in Japan). 

A general discussion followed presided by Prof. Han Doo-Bong of Korea University. The panelists were senior researcher Kwock Chang Keun of Korea Food Research Institute, Prof. Kim Min-Kyung of Konkuk University, and Prof. Ahn Byeong-Il of Korea University.
