Background and Purpose of Research
○ With the advent of the WTO system following the conclusion of the Uruguay Round negotiations in the mid-1990s, the agro-food industry experienced a strengthened international division of tasks based on efficiency, resulting in the expansion of the agro-food global value chain (GVC). However, recent spikes in international food prices and global supply chain crises have raised concerns about the risks associated with the expanding agro-food GVCs. In South Korea, WTO membership and numerous Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have accelerated the opening of the agro-food sector, increasing imports of grains, meat, and fruits while boosting exports of certain agricultural and processed food products, thus heightening dependency on foreign agro-food sources. The expansion of agro-food GVCs has become a significant factor in the increased volatility of domestic agro-food supplies and prices.
