Purpose of Research
○ Sustainable development and community-driven development are universally acknowledged as essential in rural area contexts. Indeed, governments have implemented strategies, such as bottom-up rural development planning and village development projects, that emphasize community-driven development. However, few extant policies explicitly aim at rural community revitalization, with a demonstrative example of this assertion being that the existing bottom-up rural development policies are heavily focused on infrastructure investment and show limited success in fostering community leadership. Moreover, the recent changes in rural societies, such as the decline of village functions and the diversification of residential patterns (e.g., family’s having dual residence across urban and rural areas), demand a redefinition of rural community strategies. This study aimed to examine the current status and transformation of rural communities, identify the conditions necessary for rural communities to contribute to sustainable development, and propose measures to foster development in these communities.
