An Economic Impact and Countermeasure Policies of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

The purpose of this study is to estimate economic impacts of HPAI(Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) and discuss how to improve current animal disease surveillance system. This study finds out that economic loss from the outbreak of HPAI is about more than 630 billion Won. This amount includes losses of all related industries and fields.
This study also reviewed current animal disease surveillance system of Korea. Introducing an early warning system for HPAI is important to reduce a potential loss caused by HPAI outbreak. Several systematic changes are recommended to establish an early warning system.
This study consists of five chapters. Chapter 2 introduces cases of the outbreak of HPAI and HPAI surveillance system. Chapter 3 calculates economic losses from HPAI and chapter 4 argues how to improve current surveillance system. Finally, chapter 5 recommends several policy to reduce economic impacts from the outbreak of HPAI.
