The 2005 Poll Result on Farmers' Attitude Changes and Pending Problems

This public poll was conducted by mailing out questionnaires to 2,000 correspondents in local areas by the Korea Farming Village Economy Research Institute and analyzing 680 research tables of respondents.
As a research result, as for the satisfaction level of farming life of farming population, about 1 out of 10 respondents (9.5%) answered ‘satisfied’, which is a similar level from that of the previous year.
As for the satisfaction level of farming, 17.1% of respondents answered ‘satisfied’, which is a bit lower than that of the previous year (20.5%).
As for interests related to farming, ‘a purchase of autumnal harvest grain by the government' posted the highest ratio of 26.9% due to the influence of the abolishment of the purchase system, and ‘the start of the import of agricultural products’ maintained 25%.
As for difficulties in farming, ‘insufficient farm workers’ was proven the highest (21.6%), and ‘unstable price of agricultural products’ (21.4%) was the next.
As for an understanding on the delay of the imposition on customs on rice, nearly half the respondents (47.6%) answered it was an ‘unavoidable selection’ for the ratification for the negotiation over rice which was done by the National Assembly.
59.7% of respondents expected the ‘direct payment system for preserving income gained from selling rice’ to be helpful in stabilizing the farming household income. As for the way of the application of purchase price to the public savings for emergency, ‘the application of the same price nationwide’ (60.2%) was clearly preferred to ‘the application of price by region’(33.7%).
As for agricultural administration that the government needs to be intensively focused on, ‘income policy’ was proven the highest (67.9%), and then, ‘farming village policy’(17.4%) and ‘farming policy’ (14.7%) followed.
As for the area that is hoped to be extended for investment and financing, ‘the execution of diverse direct payment systems’ was chosen to be the most imperative (12.3%, and ‘the reduction of burden by supporting pensions for farming population’ (9.9%) was the next.
The ‘income stabilization policy for rice farming households, such as the execution of the direct payment system for preserving income gained from selling rice’ was valued highest(3.2 points) of the rice industry policies intensively pursued in 2005.
As for a plan of closing/integrating 1,976 small-scale elementary, middle, and high schools by 2009, more than half the respondents (60.2%) answered ‘agreed’ to it.
67.2% respondents answered they are performing environment-friendly farming, and as for the reason, 68.2% respondents replied they want to secure trust from consumers by producing safe eateries.
As for food safety management affairs, 6 out of 10 respondents insisted that ‘they should be wholly organized and arranged by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’, and nearly half the respondents (48.1%) preferred ‘the Ministry of Agriculture and Science’ as its new name.
