The Forum for Agricultural Policy Research in Northeast Asia(FANEA) was established by Korea Rural Economic Institute(KREI), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS) and the Policy Research Institute under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan(PRIMAFF) in Oct 2003. This forum was aimed to establish a collaborative relationship in agricultural research and related aspects across Korea, China and Japan, including a joint commitment to foster mutually beneficial research and development in the Northeast Asian countries.
The activities for FANEA in 2005 are mainly consisted of international symposium, joint studies, invitation seminars, management of homepage, and other related activities. Director General/President Meeting of FANEA was held on April 29, 2005 to discuss the detailed plan for FANEA 3rd International Symposium, joint research projects and other cooperative programs. In this meeting, theme, time and venue of the 3rd FANEA International Symposium and other matters such as joint research and exchange of researchers were discussed and determined.
The 3rd FANEA International Symposium under the theme of "Global Economy and Sustainable Development of Agriculture in North East Asia" was held from Oct 25 through 26 in Tokyo, Japan. In this symposium, hosted by PRIMAFF, 15 papers dealing with three subordinate themes such as 'Economic Growth and Social Problems in NEA', 'Rural Development and Disparity Problems in NEA', and 'Multifunctionality of Agriculture and Rural Environment in NEA' were presented and debated by participants from three countries.
Since 2003, FANEA International Symposium has been annually held in Korea, China and Japan in turn. Until this year, 35 papers were presented in the Symposium. The Forum have been performed a critical role in enhancing mutual understanding on regional agricultural issues by the cooperation among IAE/CAAS, PRIMAFF, and KREI.
As a joint research project, FANEA performed a joint study on “Plan for boosting agricultural cooperation after the FTA among Korea, China and Japan” with Research Center for Rural Economics, Ministry of Agricultural P.R. China. For cooperative research on “D/B and Modeling of Agricultural Trade and Policy Analysis in Northeast Asian Agriculture” the researchers involved from three institutes discussed problems and solutions through experts meeting held in Oct, Japan.
Besides, FANEA have hosted two invitation seminars with titles “China's Economic Rise and Impacts on Korean Peninsula” and “China's agricultural trade and competitiveness.” It also held an International Symposium on Agricultural and Rural Development in Northeast Asia under the theme of ?Now and future of Rice industry in North east Asia?. In this symposium, attendees discussed the problems and prospects in the filed of production, marketing and processing of rice in the course of opening of rice market.
