World productions of kiwifruit are mainly produced in Italy, followed by New Zealand and Chile. Growing areas of New Zealand had substantially increased by 1998, but have been decreasing 3.6% per year to reach 16,000 hectares in 2004. Kiwifruit productions in New Zealand have been increasing since 1995. New Zealand produced 260,000 tones of kiwifruit in 2004. The kiwifruit production of South Korea has reduced recently, but high consumer demand for kiwifruit shows an increasing tendency every year. A shortage of kiwifruit in South Korea may require importing kiwifruit from overseas, therefore South Korea would need to significantly increase the quantity of kiwifruit every year. Production of kiwifruit in South Korea produced locally about 30% in 2004, and the rest, 70%, is dependent on imports from overseas. Among kiwifruit being imported, the ratios of imports to South Korea are 83% from New Zealand, 8% from USA and 9% from Chile. Contracted FTA trade between Korea and Chile, kiwifruit from New Zealand is of a higher quality than from Chile, but the price of Chilean kiwifruit is predicted to be cheaper. By 2014, more Chilean kiwifruit (18,000 tones, 41%) is predicted to be imported than from New Zealand (9,000 tones, 21%)
The method of collaboration between New Zealand and South Korea is off season in South Korea. New Zealand kiwifruit exports are good, safe and of high quality to Korean consumers. At present, ZESPRI has contracted with Korean kiwifruit growers (especially Jeju Island) and will be extending the growing areas to provide all year around to consumers. ZESPRI has also provided and transferred production technology to Korean kiwifruit growers. Imported Kiwifruit from New Zealand distributed through Korea Agricultural Marketing information Service would be researched.
