An Analysis of Farmers' Rice Distribution
This paper sheds a light on the situations of rice con- sumption and sales. To analyze rice distribution the monthly and usage-based, National Statistics Office (NSO) data were used by region and cultivated area. Rice sales, dealing amount and clients selection criteria for 2002 were examined by the KREI mo- nitoring panel by phone.
The results of analyzing raw data of rice consumption survey of NSO showed that average consumption and sales proportion out of harvest from 2001 to 2002 were 27.8% and 72.2% respectively. From October to December, 62.9% of annual consumption was made. The rice sales from October to December and from October to January, the main shipping periods, recorded 71.7% and 76.6%, respectively, and the consumption and sales continued into next October. Farmers were found to consume, donate and sell the rice produced in the previous year until the harvesting time of new crop.
Farmers preferred high price, convenience in sale and easy encashment in order. And farmers are satisfied with RPC than other distribution agents like milling company and regional rice collector in terms of price and confidence. Although there were slight differences from previous studies, 41% of marketable rice was sold to RPC.
59 out of 83 farmers changed clients with in recent 5 years and reduced the share of RPC, milling company, wholesaler, and retailer. The farms that reduced the sales proportion to milling company increased the sales to RPC, and agricultural cooperatives. The farms that reduced the sales proportion to RPC increased the proportion of sales to milling company and direct sales. Some farms showed the intention of changing to direct sales because of high margin.
