Strategies for the Promotion of Regional Industry with Medicinal Herbs

The purposes of this study are to figure out the directions for the development of medicinal herb industry and the strategies for the promotion of regional industry with medicinal herbs. Major contents of this study consist of (1) finding varieties and distribution of medicinal herbs and their demand (1) construct special herb complex for high quality products and stable supply. Producer organization was also recommended for enlargement of farming size, introduction the good agricultural practice(GAP) and sustainable farming methods with traceability at the zone. (2) produce various herb goods which are preferred by consumers. Subsidy for the facility & operation capital, training & extension service for small farmers’ cooperation to encourage entrance of the business, (3) recommend a production-marketing linkage project based on the contract for reformation of the marketing structure of medicinal herbs, (4) support for the research and development of region specific medicinal herb to solve faced difficulties such as high production cost, low quality of products and marketing efficiency, (5) reform the medicinal herb standardization system and the medicinal herb demand-supply control system. In addition, administration for the production and marketing of medicinal herb should be rearrange from Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs(MIHWAF) to Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries(MIFAFF) to reduce administrative waste from overlapping and enhance efficiency based on specialization.
Third, establishment of the special herb complex are provided for the purpose of regional development with medicinal herbs. The complex which based on the contract farming with GAP certification produce high quality special indigenous herb products, thus differentiated marketing is available with well-know brand. In addition, this special herb complex project provides integrated approach to enhance efficiency for supporting production, processing, and marketing for the promotion of medicinal herb industry.
