This paper`s aim is to find out the characteristics of the rice farming of
the Jeonra-do Neungju area in the early 19th century. We can consult the
'Chinongpyeon' section of the "Jukgyopyeonram", one of the regional agricultural
manuals, compiled by Han, Seok-Hyo in A.D. 1849. The characteristic of the
cultivation practices adopted by the Han's family and described in this manual
are as follows.
There were regional characteristics about the sellecting of breeds planted,
the relation of seeding and plowing, the elimination of weeds, and so on.
Drawing a conclusion, the method of rice farming in this area were different
from the ones preferred in other regions, as preferable plants were selected for
cultivation considering the weather conditions and the soil status of the
area.
