The Korea Rural Economic Institute held a seminar on July 7 with the participation of Dr. Floor Brouwer of Agricultural Economics Research Institute (LEI) of the Netherlands as the guest speaker. Dr. Brouwer, who heads the Research Unit on Management of Natural Resources, delivered a keynote speech on EU's green growth strategy in the agro-food sector.
According to him, the EU plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% until 2050 from the level of 1990. He said that in the agro-food sector, too, various efforts are made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as application of cultivation technologies for carbon sequestration in soil and forest, protection of pastures, restoration of wetlands, no-tillage farming, and reduction of soil erosion.
Following the presentation, discussions were held on a wide range of issues related to green growth in the EU, such as the goals of the Aichi Protocol, the budget system of EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), importation of bio-energy, policy means to reduce greenhouse gases, and policy combination.
