KREI Held Korea-Netherlands Conference on Food Security The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) on Nov. 6 held the “Regional Conference on Food Security: Strengthening Food Security through International Agricultural Development Cooperation” at The-K Hotel Seoul. The event was hosted by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and organized by KREI. The conference participants shared cases of international agricultural development cooperation related to climate smart agriculture and technical innovation as ways to strengthen food security in Asia, and discussed cooperation plans. In her keynote speech, Deputy Director-General Kim Hyoeun of the Global Green Growth Institute shared climate change issues concerning food security, and stressed the importance of international cooperation and the development of new technologies necessary for food security. Session 1 focused on technical changes in climate smart agriculture and the need for continuous policy research. Session 2 on technologies and innovation related to food security consisted of presentations on relevant ODA projects and policies. In the discussion session, KREI President Kim Changgil and Vice-Minister for Agriculture Marjolijn Sonnema of the Netherlands said that to enhance food security, the following are crucial: the strengthening of farmers’ capacity and ICT cooperation and research regarding climate change. |
