KREI President Choi Sei-kyun visited Cuba from February 19 to 22, 2016 to seek Korea-Cuba agricultural exchange and cooperation plans. He visited INIFAT (Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical) of Cuba's Agriculture Ministry, Alamar's urban farm, a cigar farm, and a 6th industry farm utilizing organic produce, and attended the 2016 Korea-Cuba Knowledge Dialogue hosted by Korea's National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment (MINCEX). KREI drew practical agendas for the two countries' exchange and partnership in the agricultural sector from the visits to Cuba's agriculture-related institutions and the Knowledge Dialogue: the two nations need to cooperate on programs for rural development, the agricultural material industry, and the agricultural infrastructure industry that Korea has focused on in the agriculture sector, and it is necessary to research Cuba's sustainable, environment-friendly agriculture, urban farming, and socialist farm management system. KREI said that future research on the Cuban socialist agricultural management system would be very helpful in understanding North Korea's farm management system after the unification of North and South. |
