A critical role of the transportation infrastructure in agricultural productivity has been widely recognized. Despite the widespread recognition and acceptance that such a relationship exists, empirical studies testing this hypothesis in the agricultural sector is rare both in Korea and abroad. With a focus on the transportation accessibility conditions among regions, this study intends to examine the effect of transportation infrastructure on agricultural productivity. Using panel data on 152 local autonomies throughout 2010-2016, the study employs spatial panel models that best fit our data’s spatial structure. The key findings of the study are that while both road and railway accessibility indices are negatively associated with agricultural productivity, the increase in railway accessibility in modal regions is closely related to the efficiency gains of neighboring areas concerning agricultural productivity. Presenting the problems of the negative relationship between transportation SOC and agricultural productivity, this study concludes with some policy implications and discusses limitations in research for future directions for related studies.
