During the Vietnam War, the Korean government dispatched a Korean Agricultural Technical Group (KATG) to support South Vietnam. It was the first case of overseas transfer of farming technologies in Korean agricultural history, but so far, there have not been sufficient studies on this.
The dispatch of the KATG to Vietnam took place under the structure of trilateral economic cooperation formed between Korea, South Vietnam, and the United States. Starting with March 18, 1967, it lasted more than eight years until Vietnam became communized in April 1975. During this period, at least 200 domestic experts were dispatched to Vietnam. They supported South Vietnam in the fields of the agricultural economy, water management, and fisheries. Their support contributed to the restoration and development of the farming and fishing industry in South Vietnam, devastated by the war. They also played a role in supporting Korean troops dispatched to Vietnam. The dispatch of the KATG to Vietnam also achieved approximately USD 2 million.
The dispatch of the KATG to Vietnam during the war period has significance in research for agricultural history and war history as well. Therefore, more studies to supplement the outcome of this research need to be followed.
