Beata Humilda O. Obsioma

Senior Manager

National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS)

Self-Introduction

I am Beata Humilda Obsioma, one of the participants from the Philippines.

I work at the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) as one of the senior managers.

Under the Philippine law, my office is a specialized regulatory agency attached to the Department of Agriculture and the sole national controlling authority on meat inspection and meat hygiene.

The start of the online course went on smoothly. But, a strong typhoon hit Manila last November 11 and 12, 2020. It damaged and caused the slowing down of the internet services. Hence, we experienced very slow internet connectivity in our office.

Thank you to the KAPEX online crew for not stopping the lectures and allowed me to continue listening to them even though it was already past the allotted time.

What I Learned from KAPEX Academy Program?

Before the training, I have no idea about agricultural developments in South Korea. I only know of the famous Korean singers like Psy who sang “Gangnam Style”, Blackpink, EXO, and Kpop group, which became global phenomenon.

My ignorance prompted me to be curious about the Korean agriculture.

After the lectures, I am greatly amazed of the advanced Korean technologies, like the SMART agriculture, and the widespread acceptance and implementation of the technologies from the farms to the markets.

I salute the Korean government for the tremendous support that the government is giving to the agriculture sector in terms of policies and legislations, funding support, and education of the stakeholders. Combined these with the intense commitment and participation of the farmers and people from the concerned sub-sectors, these enabled Korea to attain the state of agricultural development that it has today.

My Plans to Apply What I learned from KAPEX to the Philippines

1. To prepare a draft Bill to institutionalize the standard grades of pork carcasses in the slaughterhouses and to submit this to the Philippines Congress through the endorsement of the Secretary of Agriculture;

2. To look for funding support to purchase carcass grading equipment and IT traceability technology for the pilot test of the implementation of the developed standard pork carcass grades, and;

3. To spread the learnings by word of mouth. Whenever I can, I tell my workers and co-workers story about agricultural developments and best practices in Korea which we don’t have yet in the Philippines.

Thank you.
