Improving International Agricultural Cooperation Projects’ Effectiveness by Selecting Key Cooperation Fields

KREI Held ODA Round Table Conference for Development of Agricultural Cooperation in Asia

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI, President Kim Changgil) selected key agricultural cooperation fields for 7 Asian countries to enhance the effectiveness of international agricultural cooperation projects, and announced the results at the “ODA Round Table Conference for the Development of Agricultural Cooperation in Asia” at the Koreana Hotel, Seoul, on the 16th.

The event was attended by people related to international agricultural development cooperation in 7 Asian countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam) and agricultural and rural development experts at international organizations including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The attendees discussed key cooperation fields by country and future partnership strategies.

KREI selected key cooperation fields based on each nation’s agricultural development strategies, international organizations’ plans, and Korea’s country partnership strategies. The following are the key fields for future international agricultural cooperation for the 7 Asian countries.

Myanmar: comprehensive rural development; creating an agricultural production base; an agricultural marketing system; and developing and managing irrigation and drainage systems. Vietnam: comprehensive rural development; improving the farmland infrastructure and system; and environment-friendly agriculture. Cambodia: comprehensive rural development; enhancing food crop productivity; establishing an agricultural marketing system; a system for agricultural technology development and field extension support; and agricultural workforce training. Laos: comprehensive rural development; creating an agricultural production base; and establishing an agricultural marketing system. Indonesia: enhancing food crop productivity; a system for agricultural technology development and field extension support; and promoting specialized rural projects. The Philippines: establishing a system for agricultural technology development and dissemination; building a post-harvest management system; supporting the systematization of an input supply system; and supporting the industrialization of agriculture by creating a value chain system. Mongolia: supporting the establishment of a system for exporting livestock products; and creating industrial complexes for controlled horticulture.

KREI will discuss the key cooperation fields further with the partner countries through conferences, and determine the key fields early next year.
