The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) and the Presidential Committee on Regional Development jointly hosted a policy seminar on August 30 on the topic of policy direction to increase rural settlement of urban residents. At the seminar, which was held at the conference hall of the research institute, KREI President Oh Se-Ik delivered the opening remark and asked the participants to come up with good policy suggestions, saying that the policy scope and contents have to be expanded and diversified so that urban residents who are planning to start a new life in the countryside can contribute to the local society. Following the speech, Chairman Hong Chul of the Presidential Committee on Regional Development delivered a congratulatory message.
The keynote speakers and their presentation topics were as follows: Park Shi-Hyun (director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Policy Research, KREI), policy direction to stimulate rural settlement of urban residents; Hwang Ju-Hong (governor of Gangjin County, Jeollanamdo), cases and future tasks of rural settlement support policies; Lee Hwan-Eui (resident of Hongseong, Chungcheongnamdo), preparations for rural settlement, settlement process, and policy demand); and You Sang-Ou (CEO of Green Korea Consulting), support measures in preparation for rural settlement of urban residents.
The general discussions were presided by Jeong Young-IL, chairman of Korea Regional Development Foundation. The panelists were Kim Jong-Gu (head of Business and Human Resource Development Division, Agriculture Ministry), Park Shin-Woo (department chief of Presidential Committee on Regional Development), Park Yong-Bum (director general of REFARM), Oh Sung-Sup (prospective rural resident), Cho Won-Hee (director of Sangju Refarm Info Center), and Choi Hyuk-Jae (research fellow of Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements).
